Melghat Tribal Rehabilitation Project

MELGHAT HEALTH PROJECT, MELGHAT,

Amaravathi District of Maharastra

MAHAN Trust

Over the years, the Melghat region of Amravati district has seen numerous cases of malnutrition. Villages here are generally far-flung and Govt. health services struggle to reach the people and provide adequate services.

Dr. Ashish Satav, is president of MAHAN Trust and is working for the health care of Tribals in Melghat. His engagement in the Melghat region for the past 11 years has been to provide medical facilities to the tribals in the region. Dr. Satav has reduced under 5 children mortality and prevalence of severe malnutrition by more than 50% and age specific mortality (16-60 years) by 18% in 17 villages of Melghat through home based child and adult care with the help of village health workers using randomized control trial method. Dr. Satav has also presented papers at national and international level. He has bagged several awards for his social service and medical research. He is member of Bhavishya Alliance, an international alliance for reducing malnutrition in Maharashtra, state level Village Child Development Committee of Rajmata Jijau Mother & Child , Health & Nutrition  Mission of Govt. of Maharashtra, and European Society of Pediatric research. Dr. Satav holds an M.D. in Internal Medicine. He is an associate professor at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram.
About MAHAN: MAHAN, an acronym for “Meditation, AIDS, Health, Addiction, Nutrition”, was formed in 1998 by Dr. Ashish Satav and his wife, Dr. Kavita Satav. Their aim is to provide basic health services to the tribal population of Melghat, a hilly forest area, where majority of the people are below the poverty line. This area is known for highest mortality for the children under the age of 5 and in the age group of 16-50 years in Maharashtra. Most of the mortality is the result of malnutrition.
Accomplishments:
  1. More than 46493 patients have been treated till date
  2. Operated more than 692 cases with ophthalmic problems like cataract (free of cost -intra-ocular lens implantation), eye injuries, minor surgeries etc.
  3. Over 500 patients treated in the hospital with serious illnesses like Myocardial infarction, brain haemorrhage, cerebral malaria, meningitis, tetanus etc.
  4. Trained 19 village health workers for treatment of children under the age of 5.
Additionally, MAHAN conducts many preventive programs, namely health education programme, youth dialogue and health training programme, strengthening of existing health care systems and policy level engagement.

Poor student needs financial help to pursue his higher studies

If someone extends their helping hand, he would excel in his studies.
Though he is competent, his parents are no more for providing good education.  He is poor enough to pull on his daily life.  With somebody’s help he could come upto 10+2 standard.
This is the condition of Mr. B. Rajasekhar Reddy, who lost his parents due to health problems. He could continue his studies with the help of some lecturers. He continued his studies by staying in the hostel of Schedule Castes.
He has secured 550 marks (91.66%) in 10th standard examination and 968 marks (96.8%) in the 10 + 2 examination (Intermediate) in M.P.C. Group.  Now he has got 4379th rank in EAMCET with 105 marks.  Now is working in private school.  He has excelled in his studies with the available meager resources.  His aim is to become an engineer.

Poverty shatters tribal boy's dreams

M. Veera Babu secures 77th rank in IIT without any coaching

For seven years since he joined Jawahar Navodaya School, M. Veera Babu studied vigorously to realise his dream of securing admission in any of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology.

The 19-year-old tribal student's hard work finally paid dividends when he got a rank of 77 in scheduled tribe category and admission in IIT Kanpur. But poverty is standing between him and the IIT as the fatherless teenager is unable to bear the annual expenditure running into nearly Rs. 70,000 a year to complete his studies.

Babu hails from an interior village of Usirikayalapalli in Karepally mandal of Khammam district. His father Bhuli, a labourer, died in his childhood. Since then, his mother shouldered the responsibility of the family by working as labourer in the village. His three sisters - one elder to him- are pursuing studies.

Despite not undergoing any dedicated coaching for IIT joint entrance examination, Babu reached his cherished goal by relying on books available in the school. He did not appear for EAMCET as the intermediate syllabus was different from that of the CBSE to which the Jawahar Navodaya School was affiliated.

He is likely to get admission either in four-year metallurgical engineering or five-year integrated M.Sc. (Chemistry). Babu has to pay Rs. 30,000 fee for two semesters each year and Rs. 1,500 a month towards hostel expenses. Money for books and miscellaneous expenditure takes his average annual budget to Rs. 70,000.

For his mother working as daily-wage earner, that is huge sum and mobilising it looks next to impossible. All through his life, Babu wanted to be an IITian and hence preferred not to join National Institute of Technology, Warangal, though he got admission there this year.

“When the opportunity has come, inability to pay money is leaving my future in doldrums. I am appealing to kind hearted people for financial assistance and simultaneously trying to borrow money,” he said. Those interested in supporting him can call +91 96181-61977.

Shri Ratan Tata's gesture

Shri Ratan Tata is the chairman of Indian Hotels who own the Taj Mahal Hotel Mumbai, which was the target of the terrorists last year .
Hotel President a 5 star property also belongs to Indian Hotels.
The following is really touching.
What Ratan Tata did for the Mumbai victims.... Don't miss!!!!!!
SALUTE TO SHRI RATAN TATA

A. The Tata Gesture
All category of employees including those who had completed even 1 day as casuals were treated on duty during the time the hotel was closed. Relief and assistance to all those who were injured and killed The relief and assistance was extended to all those who died at the railway station, surroundings including the “Pav- Bha ji” vendor and the pan shop owners.
During the time the hotel was closed, the salaries were sent by money order.
A psychiatric cell was established in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences to counsel those who needed such help.
The thoughts and anxieties going on people’s mind was constantly tracked and where needed psychological help provided.
Employee outreach centers were opened where all help, food, water, sanitation, first aid and counseling was provided. 1600 employees were covered by this facility.
Every employee was assigned to one mentor and it was that person’s responsibility to act as a “single window” clearance for any help that the person required.
Sri Ratan Tata personally visited the families of all the 80 employees who in some manner – either through injury or getting killed – were affected. The dependents of the employees were flown from outside Mumbai to Mumbai and taken care off in terms of ensuring mental assurance and peace. They were all accommodated in Hotel President for 3 weeks.
Sri Ratan Tata himself asked the families and dependents – as to what they wanted him to do.
In a record time of 20 days, a new trust was created by the Tatas for the purpose of relief of employees.
What is unique is that even the other people, the railway employees, the police staff, the pedestrians who had nothing to do with Tatas were covered by compensation. Each one of them was provided subsistence allowance of Rs. 10K per month for all these people for 6 months.
A 4 year old granddaughter of a vendor got 4 bullets in her and only one was removed in the Government hospital. She was taken to Bombay hospital and several lacs were spent by the Tatas on her to fully recover her.
New hand carts were provided to several vendors who lost their carts. Tata will take responsibility of life education of 46 children of the victims of the terror.
This was the most trying period in the life of the organisation. Senior managers including Ratan Tata were visiting funeral to funeral over the 3 days that were most horrible.
The settlement for every deceased member ranged from Rs. 36 to 85 lacs [One lakh rupees tranlates to approx 2200 US $ ] in addition to the following benefits:
a. Full last salary for life for the family and dependents;
b. Complete responsibility of education of children and dependents – anywhere in the world.
c. Full Medical facility for the whole family and dependents for rest of their life.
d. All loans and advances were waived off – irrespective of the amount.
e. Counselor for life for each person

B. Epilogue
How was such passion created among the employees? How and why did they behave the way they did?
The organisation is clear that it is not something that someone can take credit for. It is not some training and development that created such behaviour. If someone suggests that – everyone laughs
It has to do with the DNA of the organisation, with the way Tata culture exists and above all with the situation that prevailed that time. The organisation has always been telling that customers and guests are #1 priority
The hotel business was started by Jamshedji Tata when he was insulted in one of the British hotels and not allowed to stay there.
He created several institutions which later became icons of progress, culture and modernity. IISc is one such institute. He was told by the rulers that time that he can acquire land for IISc to the extent he could fence the same. He could afford fencing only 400 acres.
When the HR function hesitatingly made a very rich proposal to Ratan – he said – do you think we are doing enough?
The whole approach was that the organisation would spend several hundred crore in re-building the property – why not spend equally on the employees who gave their life?
This is NOT COVRED BY Any NEWS CHANNELS Like JOKERS RUNNING AAJTAK, ZEE NEWS , IBN. These People Busy SHOWING DOGS CATS and Dalits and covers all BUL SHIT .

Please Help Haiti Earthquake Victims...!!!

An earthquake centered near the impoverished Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince caused the collapse of several buildings and an unknown number of fatalities Tuesday. The quake measured 7.0 on the Richter scale. The International Red Cross estimated that about three million people were affected by the quake, and the Haitian Interior Minister believes that up to 200,000 could be dead, exceeding earlier Red Cross estimates of 45,000–50,000 people killed. A number of prominent public figures are among the dead.
The earthquake caused major damage to Port-au-Prince. Most major landmarks were significantly damaged or destroyed, including the Presidential Palace (the President survived), the National Assembly building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and the main jail. To compound the tragedy, most hospitals in the area were destroyed. The United Nations reported that the headquarters of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), located in the capital, had collapsed and that the Mission's Chief, Hédi Annabi, was missing.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and is ranked 149th, of 182 countries, on the Human Development Index. There is concern that Haitian emergency services are unable to cope with a major disaster; the country is considered "economically vulnerable" by the Food and Agriculture Organization. Furthermore, it has been struck by multiple hurricanes, causing flooding and widespread damage, most recently in 2008 from Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gustav.

Our hearts & prayers go out to the victims of the earthquake and their families.
